Oh Hell I Actually Did it…

Well I finally got around to doing it, and by “it” I mean starting a blog. Whether anyone will actually read the damn thing is a whole ‘nother matter but that’s where the excitement is right? No way to find out ‘til I try, which brings my to my first topic: why I’m going to bother with this in the first place.

The internet is an all-you-can-gorge media buffet with never ending streams of consciousness pouring into your own from all corners of cyberspace. Hell there is that there “youtube” I keep hearing so much about. It seems to exist as a means for attention whores and Jackasses ( two kinds of entities or the same thing? ) who can’t wait to post their next “Here’s <Jackass> with\doing <Stupid Shit>” to expose the rest of the internet community. The idea of acting the buffoon for attention (intentional or not) isn’t some revolutionary concept though, such entertainment has existed mainly in the realm of cable television for some time (e.g. Jackass, America’s Funniest Home Videos or anything reality based ). Twitter is similar except it removes the instant feed of visuals with brief chunks of text. Its almost a game really: try to describe the splendor of that huge deuce you forced out on your latest trip to the white throne in as much (or little) detail as desired while still staying under the 140 character limit. Awesome.

OMG Whats all this? I feel like a random tangent is a brewin’ so I’m gonna derail my current train of thought to explore the idea of twitter a little bit more. Please bear with me and help yourself to the complimentary Oreos and truck stop piss water coffee supplied in the unmarked early 20th century percolator on the crappy table by the door. Everybody good? Alright then.  Personally it (twitter in case you or I forgot) is not a service I use. I once signed up for an account, posted maybe two or three tweets about some irrelevant bull-plurp I made up and then promptly never used it again (managed to get about two followers from that the last time I chaecked though). Most people use it as an instant celebrity stalker on the next big thing I have a hard time giving a flying shit stick about. Remember what I said about twitter earlier in this post? I didn't want to imply that Twitter is completely devoid of entertainment value when I mentioned it in conjunction with youtube. Just look at the number of followers for that guy who does the “Shit My Dad Says”. Part of the reason those brief quotes are so entertaining is because it leaves a lot to the imagination, including the setting and an characters up to the minds of the reader to fill in the blanks. We can fit those interpretations to our own definition of what is funny to appeal to more people. Youtube videos lay their cards on the table, so to speak. What you see is what you get and little room for interpretation eliminates potential fans of the content. Oh god and the comments too. Whether or not that this actually means anything is irrelevant though; both services are still insanely popular and that is not gonna change anytime soon. Whatever they do, they’re doin’ it right. Alright, glad that is out of the way.

Back to what I was trying to get at before. Basically the internet is one huge data hub that twists and serves the data it contains in new (and sometimes nasty) ways. You want news, here is your news. How do you want it? Text or video? Funny parody or biased, uninformed or plain ol’ straight up? You don’t need me to tell ya there is a lot just waitin for you to click.. Constant exposure to all of this media gives me a lot to think about and hence the point of this blog: a place to spill my own consciousness and data interpretation in with the rest of the internet soup. Whether anyone will gain something from this is anyone’s guess. So expect to see posts about my spin on the goin’ ons of our media world with a generous helpin’ of tangents and mostly irrelevant anecdotes to break up my flow of logic. Stick with it and I’ll try not to sound like some kind of conceited ass.

Cheers!
